The News

Microsoft's already announced it'll unveil Windows 11 on the 24th of June, but someone's gone and leaked a bunch of screenshots on Baidu and have ended up on The Verge. At first glance there doesn't seem to be much different going on here. The start menu and pinned shortcuts are now shoved in the middle of the taskbar and the start menu itself is a refined version of what we've got now in Windows 10. Windows get rounded corners, Widgets are back, there's a new startup sound and yeah, that seems about it. More turd polishing unfortunately, not the ground up re-imagining of Windows, free of the legacy cruft, we all hope and dream for.

WA cops used COVID check-in data to find murder suspects, government was powerless to stop it

You know how every politician said not to worry about anyone except health departments accessing COVID check-in data? Well that was bullshit. West Australian police used check-in data to find potential witnesses who were in the area of a bikie gang boss murder, so they could ask them if they they saw anything. To make matters worse, the government asked police to do stop it, but were told "it was lawful, and they couldn't not do things that are lawful". Now the WA government is gonna make a law stopping police from accessing COVID related check-in data - something that should have been done over a year ago.

Something I Saw On The Internet

The new iPad Pro's mini-LED display is very good

This video shows the big difference between the 2020 and 2021 iPad Pro 12.9" displays. The new one uses a mini-LED display (only the 12.9", not the 11") and can get very, very black and has way better contrast thanks to the ability to dim up to 2,500 different zones individually, rather than large chunks. One of my favourite things about Apple is that they give a shit about the quality of displays they ship on their products and that even on "cheap" devices, the displays are awesome quality. I would love to see a 34" or so iMac Pro with a mini-LED display. I dare say it would cost a fortune, but damn it would be easy on the eyes. It's not unlike Apple to ship a computer with a display that costs less than a similar display on its own (i.e: the old 27" 5K retina iMac!).
