| | Hi all, there’s a bunch of deals today because of Amazon’s Prime Day(s). I’ve weeded out the bad ones, but there's still a lot. Enjoy! | The News | Top judge fears AI legal system, less to say about its bullshit already in the courts | Australia’s top judge says he’s worried that the rising use of AI by lawyers will mean the legal system will eventually be just computers arguing with computers (Capital Brief, $). In his first interview since becoming the High Court’s chief justice, Stephen Gageler says the court will run an AI experiment itself, but the misuse of the technology represents an “existential threat” to the adversarial system. Gageler also said the High Court wouldn’t start livestreaming hearings but — excitingly — will create a mobile-friendly website.
The Sizzle: While I’m heartened he’s taking the issue seriously, I’m not filled with confidence because the Justice seems concerned with abstract discussions about the demise of arguing your case in court rather than the real, current impact of lawyers and others junking up the system with bullshit AI (Lawyers Weekly). Or, even more seriously, judges ruling in court based on non-existent AI cases as happened last week (Reason). | Discuss in the Sizzle Slack or forum. | Gaming company will force you to legally destroy your game | Over the past few days, once great gaming company Ubisoft’s legal agreement has been circulating online because of a line requiring customers to destroy a copy of their game (GameRant). The company’s latest EULA includes a line saying that users “must immediately uninstall the product and destroy all copies of the product” if Ubisoft stops supporting the game and takes it offline. As it turns out, many other gaming companies have similar requirements (The Gamer). | The Sizzle: I’m not sure defending Ubisoft by saying “heaps of other studios have this deranged condition” is a great point. Obviously, EULAs are filled with heaps of legal mumbo jumbo that may not even be enforceable. But as it feels like more companies put conditions on letting you just buy a game to pay whenever you want, it doesn’t feel good that wanting to play Assassin’s Creed means accepting that you need to agree to becoming the gaming Manchurian candidate. | Discuss in the Sizzle Slack or forum. | Nvidia: used by gamers and by Russian drones | Once best known for its weird sexy cartoon box art (Medium), Nvidia is now occasionally the most valuable company in the world and makes money from hardware bought by Russians to power AI drones (TechSpot). Despite the US’ export ban on high powered chips to Russia, the country is “field-testing” a new drone powered by a new tiny Nvidia AI chip. | The Sizzle: Pretty bleak! Anyway, Nvidia has taken the time to clarify something really important: it’s pronounced “en-VID-ee-uh” and “NUH-vid-ee-uh” (Business Insider). | | Back before GPU boxes went woke |

It’s a cool little website that simply helps you compare times in various timezones. It’s nothing flash, but is local and pretty clean so I thought I’d give it a little shoutout — particularly useful for the people who are always having to figure out convenient times to schedule phone calls or meetings, but hate having to go to the spammy websites that do the job (me). | | That’s about it! |
