Google will force developers to register if they want their side-loaded apps to run on most Androids |
Most Android phones will soon block apps from outside the Play Store unless their developers register with Google in an effort to combat spam and malware (Android Authority). Starting in September 2026, Google is introducing a “developer verification requirement” which will be required for side-loaded apps to run on certified Android devices, meaning the vast majority of Android phones that come with Play Store installed (Android Developer Blog). Google says the changes will make life harder for malicious developers. |
The Sizzle: This probably won’t directly impact most people. Few people side-load, most developers who make apps for side-loading will probably register, and you can still buy non-certified Android devices if you’re desperate. Even still, it’s a big symbolic move for Google. Side-loading is one of the features that distinguishes Android from Apple’s walled garden. It’s almost like a safety blanket — I might not side-load it often, but it’s reassuring to know that I can if I need to. |

It’s about to get easier to punish naughty telcos |
Telcos will face 40x larger fines for misconduct under new legislation going through parliament (SMH, $). The Albanese government’s Telecommunications Amendment (Enhancing Consumer Safeguards) Bill (APH) cranks up fines for breaking telco industry codes, allows ACMA to fine telcos directly instead of the current two step process, and creates a power to register or block telcos (Bird & Bird). |
The Sizzle: Telcos are already pretty regulated, but these reform step it up even further. While the big fines will get the headlines, I’m guessing the big change will be making it easier for the ACMA to give telcos little whacks for not following industry rules, as well as giving them a ban hammer in the case that we get some truly bad actors. |

Scammers are going to have a lot of fun with AI browsers |
AI agentic browsers are extremely vulnerable to basic web scams that exploit their automation, according to one security lab’s experiments (Guardio). Guardio Labs was about to easily hijack the popular AI-powered browser, Perplexity Comet, with a fake Walmart website, phishing emails, and by creating a fake CAPTCHA that actually included some nefarious instructions for the bot. |

Meta suspends the guy who came up with the company's name |
Sci-fi author Neal Stephenson posted online yesterday that he had been suspended from Facebook because Meta suspected that the account belonged to someone impersonating him. The company’s issues with erroneous suspensions notwithstanding (Guardian), you’d think that Meta would be more careful with the guy who essentially invented the thing that the company is named after (the Metaverse) |
