It's confirmed, Linda Yaccarino is the new CEO of Twitter. She was the boss of ad sales at NBCUniversal, probably a good pick for a company that is in desperate need of advertisers to stay solvent. She will also be responsible for Musk's pipe dream of turning Twitter into a WeChat-esque "everything app" (aka X) that he's been dreaming of since the PayPal days. Elon's conspiracy theory following mates/bootlickers are cranky because Linda has a role in the World Economic Forum and supports various diversity programs - all red flags to a certain type of person that thought Elon was their messiah. God speed Linda, I hope you get paid well for this.
Apple has made the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on the iPhone 14 available to Australia and New Zealand. It works in areas without cell signal by contacting satellites directly via a very low bandwidth data connection. If you do find yourself up shit creek without a paddle, you dial 000 and when the phone realises there's no signal, presents you with an "Emergency Text via Satellite" button that lets you report your situation via satellite to an Apple-run (or at least contracted) service that relays text messages between you and emergency services like the SES/ambulance/police, etc. Gizmodo Australia has a nice article with photos of what the feature looks like in action. The chances of me being in an area with no phone coverage is virtually zero, but I like the peace of mind.
Where the fuck is Larry Page? You know, the co-founder of Google. Where is he? I ask because the U.S. Virgin Islands can't find him anywhere in the world and wants to serve him papers relating to its legal action against JPMorgan, who the Virgin Islands reckons "facilitated and directly benefited from Epstein's sex trafficking of underage girls prior to 2019, when the billionaire was found dead of an apparent suicide in a New York prison cell". Dunno what exactly the Virgin Islands are claiming Larry Page was involved in, but they want a peek at communications and payments between Page and Epstein as far back as 2002. If I was Larry Page, I too would fuck off with my billions and never be seen in public again. Even if I didn't visit pedophile island with a pedophile, I would still do that.
You can get .zip and .mov domain names now. This blog post reckons its gonna be a shitshow because now when a website or app sees something.zip, is it going to ignore it as a ZIP archive, or is it going to turn it into a hyperlink to http://something.zip, that could potentially have malware on it that the user clicks on and their computer explodes? This blog post reckons its no big deal because who is typing in filenames in the year of our lord 2023? I couldn't give a rats arse, I'm too old for this shit.
ISS038-E-019276 (21 Dec. 2013) --- Inside the U.S. lab Destiny, this photograph provides an overall view of the robotic workstation for controlling the International Space Station's remote manipulator system or Canadarm2. Astronaut Koichi Wakata, who represents the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, spent most of the work day supporting the Dec 21 spacewalk of NASA astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Mike Hopkins. It was the first of two spacewalks designed to change out a faulty water pump on the orbital outpost. (NASA)
